Meet Harry.
The humble mini underwent a big resurgence in popularity in the late 80s & early 1990's, partly due to the rebirth of the iconic mini cooper and also thanks to the groundswell of interest in the UK market special editions, where the iconic models status as national treasure made it something of a fashion accessory.
The Rover Mini Studio 2 was one such model, and was a follow-up to an Austin Metro with the same named introduced on 1987. The name is simply that of the design studio at Austin-Rovers's Canley engineering centre in which the special editions where designed - nothing more, nothing less. The Mini Studio 2 made its debut for the 1990 model year and as such was one of the first Rover-badged Minis after the Austin-Rover's rebrand to become the Rover group. As most special editions it was based on the Mini city with the 998cc A-Series engine, but came with extra equipment including doe-skin seat trim with green diagonal stripe, a three-spoke steering wheel with unique green Mini badge, full-width wheel trims, opening rear quarter windows and the R750 stereo radio-cassette (do have), along with 12 inch steel wheels and front disc brakes. it was offered in just three colours - black, storm grey and nordic blue - a colour developed for the 200 hatchback. Harry is finished in my favourite of these shades, storm grey and is fresh from a total body restoration after spending the last 12 years with the same owner. Only 1500 were built for the UK and there are only 133 licensed as of December last year! So a very rare model indeed.
The restoration included lots of new metal such as wings, bonnet, front valance and A panels. Treated to a fresh paint job in its original storm grey paint. This included the subframes being shot blasted, restored & re painted. Everything else remains original. New old stock MINI Studio 2 decals were sourced and fitted.
Under the bonnet you'll find the original 998, this has travelled 56476 miles, when removed for the restoration it was stripped and checked and then rebuilt including many new parts including valve stem oil seals. The gearbox had the same treatment including a new clutch, master cylinder & slave cylinder. This Mini drives as like new, it's remarkable. All the running gear was either refurbished or replaced with new. More recently the Mini's just had a full service. All of this work has been carried out by a 40 year service mechanic.
Internally is where you can feel the studio 2 special edition extras, the perfect doe-skin seats with green stripe are so comfy, matching door cards with storage pockets, grey seat belts, stunning brand new carpets, 2 dial dash including speedo, fuel & temperature gauge.
In summary Harry is exceptional, a real time warp and the perfect daily, weekend classic or project base. They are becoming harder and harder to find totally original. MEGA LOW ODDS!
