Say hello to Custard.
Recently featured in "Classics" magazine with a full 5 page spread, Custard is a little luxury!
The Mini Mayfair attempted to push the basic Mini envelope upwards in terms of both price and equipment. It was still pretty basic of course, but this fantastic survivor shows just why it was such a sales success.
Having been with his last owner for 30 years and spending 20 of those stored in the families garage, the decision was taken to take a closer look at him to see if the poor thing could be resuscitated. He was found to be in amazing condition and showing 56,000 miles on the clock, so some new petrol and battery and he fired straight up! There was however a few oil leaks. The paint was found to have faded quite badly and he'd accumulated a few scratches and marks whilst in there. The owners decided to enlist the help of Mini Guru Steve Birkenshaw and together the decision was taken to strip him down and to totally rebuild him. When this process was happening the rear subframe was found to be bad so a new heritage one was ordered and the only small patch of rust was on the bottom of the drivers side A panel so that was replaced. Every other panel on Custard is original. Many fresh layers of Primula yellow were applied and set against the Sundym glass he now looks stunning.
Back to the pesky oil leaks....... Although the engine ran beautifully with all fresh fluids the decision was taken to strip and inspect everything before reassembling. Of course he's a wonderful 998cc. Whilst it was stripped the valves were cut and faced, new guides and new stem seals were fitted. The main caps and big ends were removed and checked and found to be like new. A new oil pump and timing chain were also fitted. The gearbox was stripped and on examination it was found that the centre bearing was the cheap one of rubbish quality so it was replaced with the correct modified bearing, most Minis also have issues with the second synchro so again the new modified one was added. Reassembly then took place with all new seals and gaskets. All new fuel lines, radiator and new piping were also added. The original loom was retained and under the bonnet he looks as he did in the showroom. The addition of a centre exit exhaust makes a wonderful sound (does come with the original also). Suspension wise everything has been left standard but all new cones and bushes. 7.5 inch discs and all new rear brakes and piping take care of your stopping. The original 10 inch alloys have gone in favour of some stunning 10 inch John Brown wheels in black with a silver rim. The decision was taken to leave the original side stripes off. Every cavity under him has been meticulously Waxoyled.
The Raschelle knitted fabric in Sandpiper is like new! Adjustable rake means you can get comfy and they have also been re-foamed by Newton Commercial but other than that he's completely original. Simplicity is key as with all Minis. 90 MPH speedo, fuel & water temp gauge. Fog lamp switch. I LOVE the original steering wheel. Brand new carpets from Newton Commercial were ordered and fitted. He comes with 2 sets of keys, a massive file of paperwork including thousands in invoices and even a Heritage certificate and 2 copies of the magazine feature.
This is as close as you will ever get to an "as new" Mini. Complete & utter perfection!
