Meet Albie.
Strap yourself in for this one, LITERALLY!
"I'd always held on to the 80's Scaletrix Mini, thats pretty much what I've built."
A fully restored 1988 Mini Mayfair was chosen and saved from becoming a BBQ, as the base project for this exceptional build. The shell was very good and a little restoration included floors, inner & outer sills and a battery tray. A complete paint job in his original shade of red was then undertaken, inside and out. Again this Mini is as good underneath as it is on top. Carbon fibre bonnet, boot and Mini Miglia wide arches were chosen (for weight saving) and body colour matched. More carbon was added with mirrors. Door stickers and cheque roof along with the perspex sliding windows all adds to the race car feel. All brand new shiny bits were added and spot the custom bonnet with extra holes for more cooling and induction. Finally Force Racing 10x7 spilt rims wrapped in sticky Yoko Advan A032R 165 were chosen and look mega!
Internally the race car feel continues, Cobra Monaco black vinyl bucket seats with rear to match with contrasting red piping and harnesses keep you strapped in. A carbon fibre dash with a custom gauge pod houses all the important info such as Innovate air/fuel ratio gauge, Gizmo V2 boost controller, oil pressure, water temp, volts, boost and oil temp. Kode suede steering wheel is a work of art. Rear Safety Devices cage helps with stiffness. Black top and bottom rails, black carpets and matching door cards plus the addition of alloy door furniture finish the interior off perfectly.
As if this wasn't a serious enough Mini already, under the bonnet it's taken into the stratosphere! A 1293cc turbocharged with 8.7.1 compression ratio, +.020 18cc Omega forged pistons, MED steel conrods, balanced MG metro turbo crankshaft, centre main strap, ARP rod bolts, ARP head bolts, MED RS camshaft, followers and oil pump. MED turbo cylinder head with 35.7mm inlet, 30mm exhaust valves with three angle seats. 1.5 roller rockers, MED lightened fly wheel, Fusion manifolds. GT1752 turbo, polished mkIII Escort RST intercooler. Aldon Amethyst ignition. Playmini centre exit large bore exhaust. Gizmo boost controller set at 20 psi producing a safe 197 bhp and 10 psi gives an epic 120 bhp. Can be turned up to way over 20 psi giving over 200 bhp but reliability is key! Of course the gearbox has had the same treatment, MED straight cut close-ratio gear set, roller straight cut drop gears, central oil pickup X-pin diff and AP clutch. Suspension wise you'll find GAZ lowered adjustable, Hi-Los and standard cones. Adjustable tie rods with standard bottom arms. Everything is also Polybushed! With all that go you need some extra stopping power and that's taken care of by front 7.5 inch Cooper S discs. Rear Minfins and all Goodridge braided hoses. Having done 700 miles since completion it's just run in and ready to be opened up. Has just had a fresh service.
Albie is one of our craziest Mini's to date, he's got it all! Plus he's in the 200 bhp Mini club, which is a very special place to be! Also he's another Mini Magazine featured beauty!
