Say hello to Herbert!
Our greatest Clubman GT to date. He's truly exceptional.
Built 4th May 1979, dispatched 14 June 1979 and then registered on the 1st August 1979. Having just had full professional nut & bolt restoration by Classics1963. Lots of new metal, but only what was really required as keeping as much of the original shell was the aim. The new parts list was substantially long, inner & outer sills, door steps, door skins, jacking points, front floor pans, wing, front panel, bonnet, A panels, 1/4 panel, rear panel, boot floor, rear valance, all panels were treated with 2K Epoxy primer inside and out. The decision had been taken for fresh paint in its original shade of black, body and panels were 2k primed x 3 coats, sanded back then several coats of black base coat and 2k lacquer were applied, this is one of the best paint jobs I've seen. All cavities/crevices have been waxoyl'd generously. Of course everything else is original and has been re-chromed (at a huge cost) or replaced with new. Brand new replacement gold decals really standout. We of course have to make reference to the stunning original wheels that were sent for powder coating before the new Pirelli 145/70/12 tyres were fitted and finished off with the original Denovo caps!
Under the bonnet sits the original engine and gearbox that has been fully rebuilt, rebored and honed to 1293cc. Everything else is reworked or brand new parts. The gearbox of course has had the same treatment. An LCB Maniflow and full exhaust that sounds fantastic. All this results in some pretty impressive numbers of 70 bhp & 73 IBft. Herbert has an amazing rasp! Everything else has been rebuilt with new. All refurbed suspension components were repainted 2k satin black. Radius arms (refurb), new discs/pads, drums, shoes, slave cylinders, brake pipes, hoses, master cylinder, callipers (stripped refurbed new pistons and seals), clutch, clutch save, master( refurb, new innards), baring's all round, CV's/ball joints, rack (refurb) new track rod ends, column bushes, new rear subframe, front refurbed, clocks read 26k (believed to be the correct mileage), wiring loom (refurb and re taped in grey, as factory).
Internally you find brand new black vinyl interior with matching door cards. Headlining was in need of replacing, new carpet, under felt and mats and all the rubbers were replaced. Of course the famous GT clocks are retained showing all the important info, speed, revs, fuel and temperature. All original door furniture and gear knob are still retained and the recovered leather steering wheel is very smart. The front screen was replaced as it was badly scratched. The history file that comes with Herbert is seriously impressive and contains lots of photos and invoices of the restoration and includes his heritage certificate confirming his matching number status.
Herbert is as good underneath as he is on top and has massive concours potential. This is as close as you'll get to rolling out of the showroom in a new GT in 1979!
